Rano Oversees Progress on Kebagusan Basin Project

Jakarta Vice Governor Rano Karno inspected the construction of the Kebagusan retention basin, located behind the Kebagusan City Apartment in South Jakarta, Friday (1/30).

We are on track to wrap up construction by December

The 2.3-hectare basin is designed to minimize the impact of overflows from the Jalan Joe connector channel, which frequently triggers flooding in the surrounding area.

"The Jakarta Administration continues to expand and upgrade its flood control infrastructure. That is why I am here today—to oversee the progress of the Kebagusan reservoir project," he expressed.

Breaking down the numbers, Rano noted that this project is a perfect blend of environmental and social needs. Roughly eight hectares are designated for water storage, while 0.7 hectares will serve as a 'green lung.' The rest of the land will feature a playground and a miniature soccer pitch to provide residents with a much-needed breath of fresh air.

"We are on track to wrap up construction by December," he added.

The infrastructure is designed to take the edge off the area's flooding issues by shaving about 30.7 cubic meters per second off the Joe Connector Channel’s peak discharge, bringing it down to a more manageable 29 cubic meters per second.

"The impact on local flood mitigation will be significant. We are looking at a reservoir depth of about three to four meters,” Rano noted.

He is pushing for the Water Resources Agency and PAM Jaya to team up on a sustainable water solution. By doing so, the city hopes to kill two birds with one stone: managing floodwaters while providing a much-needed lifeline of clean water to nearby homes.

"My message to our water officials is clear: every new basin must be a collaborative effort with the water company. We want this resource to benefit the residents on the ground, starting right here in this community," he asserted.
